Pierce County crews repaired about 460 feet of river levee along the Carbon River’s left bank July 15-30. The work area was off the Foothills Trail trailhead at State Route 162 and 177th Street East.
The picnic area and bike racks reopened to trail users on July 30.
The section of the Charles Crocker Levee that was repaired had been eroded by the heavy flows of the Carbon River. It had also been damaged during recent high water events.
A contractor removed about nine trees on June 24 in preparation for the levee repair work.
During the levee repair work, crews removed dirt and rocks and rebuilt the levee with large rocks.
This work was part of Pierce County’s annual river levee maintenance program. Previous work in this area includes a 2013 repair of 250 feet of levee just downstream of this year’s section.
